Research Designs in Qualitative Research


    Hello Practical Research 1 Babies! Today, we are going to learn all about research designs. The choosing of the right Research design is essential in conducting research as it serves as a guide in what actions to make along the way.

Our Objectives for the day are the following:

-Describe qualitative research designs

-Identify the correct research design based from the titles given


Qualitative Research Designs

    To conduct a qualitative research, one must choose the appropriate design. Experts have identied and recommended the following research designs: Case Studies, Grounded Theory, Ethnography, Content Analysis, and Phenomenological Studies.


1. Case Study
        The case study centers on the examination of a person, program, or event in defined time frame. Cresswell (1998) says the structure of a case study should be the problem, the context, the issues and the lessons learned. He adds that sources of data collection are direct or participant observation, interviews, archival records or documents, physical artifacts and audiovisual materials. The researcher spends time in the natural setting of the people studied. The report includes lessons learned or patterns found that connect with theories.

2. Ethnography

    Ethnography is the study of a specific grouping within a culture. It is the type of research as interactive and which requires relatively extensive time in a site to systematically observe, interview and record processes that have happened in their natural setting.

    Usually, this type of research design are lengthy and researchers gather documentaries by using audiotapes or videotaped media. 

    One example of an ethnographic study on ethnic minority is the thesis done by Piers Kelly who did the srudy The Word Made Flesh: An Ethnographic History of Eskayan, a Utopian Language and Script in the Southern Philippines.

3. Grounded Theory

    The goal of grounded theory is to provide a theory about a social problem. This theory aims to clarify how people deal with difficulties in social settings in addition to identifying them. Grounded theory is different from other qualitative design approaches in that it relies only on data gathered during the research process.2. As more information about the topic is acquired, the initial research question is frequently reformed and modified. In this way, the participants aid in the design of the study.

4. Content Analysis

This research design calls for a very intricate and systematic examination of different contents of a particular body of material for the purpose of identifying patterns, themes or biases. This method examines specific characteristics of the content of human communication

5.Phenomenological Studies

Phenomenology is a broad field of study. In this research paradigm, the researcher seeks out data that reveals how people react to an event and how they feel about it. This approach acknowledges that there is no single objective reality; instead, everyone has a unique perspective on things.


The outcome is described from the participants' perspective. However, the researcher can still come up with a set of observations that can be utilized to discover themes in the phenomenon under investigation.
